Does it work? Not as well as I'd like. But I'm still certain there must be a good answer out there.
So starting now I am going to dedicate the next ten years of my life to finding the perfect font.

Damn man, this is looking so wicked. I love the little character details that humanize the robots on the train, and your main character has such a solid design, awesome work Harry!
re fonts: Have you tried making your own font on one of those internet font creators? (don't know where to find them exactly). Might not be as exact as the thousand dollar versions you can get through big publishers, but should do alright.
Great page, Harry! Love the robots. And that's a big compliment from me, cuz I'ze not a lover of robots.
Maybe making your own font could work. I've used this one:

It can take a few tries to get the whole alphabet looking right, but it comes out a nice combination of your own quirky handwriting and the nice, straight lines of typed text.
I do prefer the balloons that let the text go straight across, like in your last panel. Less distracting.
